The AWARE (Aquatic World Awareness Responsibility and Education) Coral Reef Conservation course, is a must know for a diver. It teaches you the make up and composition of coral reefs, their function in the underwater eco-system and the threats to them that exist today. On the course, which is a classroom-based, an instructor led discussion will establish the best ways to protect and conserve our coral reefs, and other initiatives that we can use to protect our reefs. We will also examine local initiatives here on Phuket and the effect they have had on our reefs, such as the marine sanctuary containing the King Cruiser, Anemone Reef and Shark Point, or the Similans Islands National Park. We will look at the effects natural events can have on the area such as global warming or the tsunami of 2004. This is a really interesting program, which takes a few hours and really gives you a great insight into what we are looking at underwater, what it does, and how we can protect and maintain it.
