On your Open Water Diver course you were taught the basic navigation techniques of using a compass in a reciprocal heading on a straight line. But that is not all navigation. The opening dive of the specialty is part of the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course and you will learn to navigate around a square. The course introduces you to all navigation techniques underwater including compass work and how to use natural navigation such as depth, light and marine life. The course makes you into a better diver as you are beginning to be able to be more self-sufficient underwater and find your way around without having to go to the surface.
Training for the course does not necessarily take place at the dive sites with the best visibility such as the Phi Phi sites, Anemone Reef or Shark Point. The point of the navigator course is to be able to find your way in all sorts of conditions, so we do some of the dives in reduced visibility to ensure that you are exposed to different conditions.
