PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor!

This is either the “second half” of your Indepth PADI IDC program, or you are a PADI or an Instructor with another training agency, in which case you would most likely be joining an IDC part way through.

During the OWSI you will be listening to 9 IDC Curriculum presentations given by your PADI Course Director and IDC Staff and in turn you will be giving a minimum of 2 x CW Teaching presentations from the PADI Open Water Diver Course and Rescue Diver Course, and 1 x Open Water Teaching Presentation of 2 skills again from the PADI Open Water Diver Course, Adventures in Diving and the Rescue Diver Course. You will 1 x Knowledge Development Teaching presentations from the Rescue Diver and Divemaster Courses.

For details of what exactly what these various Presentation consist of please refer to: The PADI Instructor Development Page

There will be also be a workshop on demonstrating the “infamous” Rescue Exercise #7 – Unconscious non-breathing Diver at the Surface (Mouth to Mask and Mouth to Mouth) and the 800m snorkel swim (which can be timed depending on what mood Chris your PADI Course Director is in so be nice to him : )

You will also have a Dive Theory Exam with the usual five topics:

  • Physics
  • Physiology
  • Dive Skills and the Environment
  • Equipment
  • Decompression Theory and the Recreational Dive Planner

This makes sure that you do understand the Dive Theory you will be teaching when you are teaching your own PADI Divemasters in the future. You will need to score a minimum of 75% on each Exam.

Don’t forget we spend 2 ½ day going over these in great detail on our Indepth 3 Day IDC Prep along with two sets of Exams that we know you have not seen before!

Upon successful completion of this program you will receive authorization to attend the Instructor Examination.

The PADI Instructor Crossover Course – the OWSI program

The PADI OWSI program allows Instructors already certified with a recognised Recreational Diving Training Agency other than PADI to “crossover” to the PADI System of Diver Education.

This is a great way to take advantage of market demands and be able to offer your employers and customers PADI courses and programs as well as your current certifying agency.

Be warned though that in over 150 PADI IDCs and PADI IEs Chris has only ever had a handful of Instructors who could have attended only the OWSI portion of an IDC – NOT because they were not great instructors but simply because it is a huge amount to learn in such a short time – no matter how good an instructor you are.

As such we strongly recommend that you attend a whole PADI IDC feel free to contact Chris directly for his knowledge and experience and thoughts on how best for you to Crossover to PADI.

So once you have completed the OWSI program what now?

Well fairly obviously you then need to attend a PADI Instructor Examination (IE) in order to become a PADI Instructor; you actually have 12 months from the date that you complete your IDC in which to take an IE which can in fact be anywhere in the world.

One thing to remember; and we do not say this to put you off, but remember there are a lot of other people out there becoming PADI Instructors and wishing to “Live the Dream” and as such you need as many “Tools in your toolbox” when you are looking for work, especially as a “new” Entry Level Instructor!

We know that as a PADI OWSI you can teach: DSD, SC, OW, AOW, Resc and DM; the question is what else can you offer your future employer and Dive Shop?

PADI Specialty Instructor Courses are now extremely important for several reasons; first of all so you can offer MORE than a standard OWSI which dramatically increases your chance of work; and secondly when you have a job as a PADI Instructor the more courses you can teach, the more different dive sites you can dive; the more adventures you will be having and the more exciting your life as a PADI Instructor is going to be!

At the end of the day you cannot go wrong learning and increasing your knowledge and skills...
