The PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor / OWSI Program
If you are taking a PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC), then this is the “second half” of your Indepth PADI IDC program. Or you are a PADI Assistant Instructor or an Instructor with another training agency, then this is what you need to do to complete the IDC.
During the OWSI you will be listening to 9 IDC Curriculum presentations given by your PADI Course Director and IDC Staff. In addition you will be giving a minimum of 2 x CW Teaching presentations from the PADI Open Water Diver Course and Rescue Diver Course. And also 1 x Open Water Teaching Presentation of 2 skills again from the PADI Open Water Diver Course, Advanced Open Water Course and the Rescue Diver Course. Lastly you will be giving 1 x Knowledge Development Teaching presentations from the Rescue Diver or Divemaster Courses.
For details of what exactly what these various Presentation consist of please refer to: The PADI Instructor Development Page
There will be also be a workshop on demonstrating the “infamous” Rescue Exercise #7 – Unconscious non-breathing Diver at the Surface. This is done by both Mouth to Mask and Mouth to Mouth methods. There is also the 800m snorkel swim, which can be timed depending on what mood Chris your PADI Course Director is in, so be nice to him!
You will also have a Scuba Instructor Dive Theory Exam with the usual five topics:
- Dive Skills and the Environment
- Decompression Theory and the Recreational Dive Planner
This is to make sure that you understand the PADI Dive Theory you will be teaching when you are teaching your own PADI Divemasters. You will need to score a minimum of 75% on each exam.
Don’t forget we spend 2 ½ day going over these in great detail on our Indepth 3 Day IDC Prep. In addition we give you two sets of Exams that we know you have not seen before!
Upon successful completion of this program you will receive authorization to attend the PADI Instructor Examination.
The PADI Scuba Instructor Crossover Course – the OWSI program.
The PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) program allows Instructors already certified with a recognised Recreational Diving Training Agency other than PADI, to “crossover” to the PADI System of Diver Education. Examples of other Training Agencies are: SSI, CMAS, BSAC, RAID and so on.
This is a great way to take advantage of market demands and be able to offer more to your employers and customers. This means you could teach PADI courses and programs as well as your current certifying agency.
Be warned though, that in over 160 PADI IDCs Chris has only ever had 2 or 3 Instructors who could have attended only the OWSI portion of an IDC. This is NOT because they were not great instructors, but simply because it is a huge amount to learn in such a short time. After all is doesn't matter how good an instructor you are. There is only so much the human brain can absorb in a certain period of time.
As such we strongly recommend that you attend a whole PADI IDC. Please feel free to contact Chris directly for his knowledge, experience and thoughts on how best for you to Crossover to PADI.
So once you have completed the Scuba Instructor OWSI program what now?
Well fairly obviously you then need to attend a PADI Instructor Examination (IE) in order to become a PADI Instructor. Although in fact you actually have 12 months from the date that you complete your IDC in which to take an IE. The PADI Instructor Exam can in fact, be anywhere in the world.
One thing to remember; and we do not say this to put you off, please remember there are a lot of other people out there becoming PADI Instructors and wishing to “Live the Dream.” As such you need as many “Tools in your toolbox” when you are looking for work, especially as a “new” Entry Level Instructor.
We know that as a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor you can teach: DSD, SC, OW, AOW, Resc and DM. However the question is what else can you offer your future employer and Dive Shop?
PADI Specialty Instructor Courses are now extremely important for several reasons. First of all so you can offer MORE than a standard OWSI which dramatically increases your chance of work. Secondly when you have a job as a PADI Instructor the more courses you can teach, the more dive sites you can dive. And consequently the more adventures you will be having, and the more exciting your life as a PADI Instructor is going to be!
At the end of the day you cannot go wrong learning and increasing your knowledge and skills...
OWSI Pricing Options: the most cost effective way to take PADI Scuba Instructor level Courses is by taking IDC packages.
