PADI TecRec: PADI Tec 50 the final dives to Full Tec Diver

This is the 3rd and final part of the full PADI Tec Deep Diver program.

If you started with PADI then you have already completed your PADI Tec 40 course. On the Tec 40 you learnt the fundamentals of Decompression Diving and you got to grips with diving with twin cylinders. This may have been backmounted or sidemount. From here you went onto to Tec 45 where you added repetitive decompression diving and the use of 1 stage / decompression gas to your skill set.

On your TecRec PADI Tec 50 Diver Course you will now adds the skills required for management of the extra cylinder. Which while it may sound simple, can actually be more challenging that you might think. Especially in an emergency. As such the course covers what is called "Extended and Accelerated Decompression Stops using up to 2 gases. The focus of the course being the mission planning involved and is the only PADI TecRec course which has 2 decompression dives at the end.

What will you learn?

Topics covered on the PADI Tec 50 course include:

  • The correct use of technical diving equipment
  • How to make repetitive Decompression dives to a max depth of 50m
  • How to use Enriched Air Nitrox and / or 100% Oxygen for accelerated decompression
  • Make extended, accelerated decompression stops using up to 2 gases.
  • How to use desk top decompression software to create custom dive tables and plan your dives
  • Plan and execute technical decompression dives independently

How can you start your PADI Tec 50 Course

Starting your PADI Tec 50 is very simple and is exactly the same the other TecRec courses in the PADI Tec Deep Diver program. The first thing you need to is to contact us and check that we can run your course on the dates that fit your schedule. We say this as we keep our ratios low and as such we can have very busy schedules. The second thing you will need to do is pay your deposit so we can send you your Tec Deep crewpack. Your Tec Deep Diver Manual and DVD are in this crewpack. As usual the manual is structured the same way as most PADI courses. There are Quick Quizzes, Knowledge Reviews and so on. For those you have not taken a PADI Tec Rec Course or PADI Rebreather Course before you will notice a small difference.

This that the Knowledge Reviews are mostly not multiple choice. Yes that's right, you will need to write out proper answers in detail like when you were at school.

Remember Knowledge Reviews are not a "closed book exam" however do try to complete without copying the answers straight out of the manual. After all we are interested in what you know and understand not what it says in the manual. We know what it says in the manual, it's what you know or don't know which we want to find out.

The third thing you should do is watch the Equipment Set-up and Key Skills DVD which comes in your Tec Diver pack. Although you watched this already on your PADI Tec 40 & 45 courses it doesn't do any harm to watch it again. Especially it has been a while since your last TecRec course.

What dive equipment will I be using on my Tec 50 Course?

You will be using a mixture of the usual basic scuba diving equipment you are already familiar with. However, we will obviously be adding some technical diving equipment. For example, during your Tec 40 & 45 course you used 2 main tanks which were back-mount or sidemount cylinders. This is something which is very much up to you and your Tec 40 Instructor. Both configurations have their advantages and disadvantages and you can use either on your Tec 50 course.

As you will be "in decompression" and thus cannot simply abort a dive and head to the surface, you will be carrying redundant (or spare) equipment. You will be carrying a spare mask, a spare dive computer in case your primary failed etc. Additionally, your Indepth PADI Tec Instructor will have use an off-board cylinder with Enriched Air Nitrox or 100% Oxygen to speed up your decompression.

Let's see what we can find at 50m .....

What's next now you are a PADI Tec 50 Diver?
