The PADI IDC Staff Course: 2 Days plus Audit of a whole IDC

This is it Instructors! Take your teaching abilities to the next level by becoming involved in the PADI Instructor Development process!

During any PADI IDC, the PADI IDC Staff Instructor is a key member of any IDC team. A PADI IDC Staff Instructor can give Classroom presentations and Evaluate Confined and also Open Water Teaching Presentations. In addition they can also work with IDC Candidates in the evening’s giving remedial training and advice. Actually the list of what they can do just goes on and on. Because of this the role of an IDC Staff Instructor is active, crucial and rewarding.

It is also a great feeling to see your candidates emerge successful from an IE.

An IDC Staff instructor is qualified to:

  • Present IDC Curriculum presentations under the supervision of a PADI Course Director
  • Grade Candidate Teaching Presentations and provide feedback
  • Grade Candidate Exams and provide feedback
  • Demonstrate with the Course Director role model presentations both in the water and classroom
  • Provide the candidates with coaching and support during the IDC
  • Independently teach and certify PADI Assistant Instructors
  • As such Chris is ALWAYS looking for GOOD and reliable PADI IDC Staff Instructors. For more details please Contact Chris

The IDCS Course has two parts:

PART ONE

  1. Two days of preassessment with your Course Director
  2. Audit of an entire IDC. Here you will be grading all the IDC Candidate presentations while being alongside your PADI Course Director. You will also be taught how to manage IDC logistics, candidate assignments, IDC / IE paperwork etc.

The first two days of the IDC Staff Course are the preassessment phase. On this part you will take a PADI Dive Theory Exam (same as your PAID IDC: Physics, Physiology, RDP etc.) We will also have you do an open book PADI Standards Exam. However this time scoring a minimum of 80% on all written exams not 75%.

PADI Course Director Presentations

Your PADI Course Director Chris will teach you about the PADI IDC Philosophy. Having taught over 150 IDC staff courses Chris has some experience in this field. Next is the most important part, which is teaching you how to grade and evaluate IDC Candidate Teaching Presentation. This is probably the most difficult part to learn along with IDC candidate counseling.

On Day 2 you will also give an IDC Confined Water Presentation from the PADI Open Water Diver Course or Rescue Diver Course. Also you will demonstrate, and be evaluated on, the 24 skills of the PADI Skill Circuit from the Divemaster Course. And just to make sure you haven't forgotten how, you will also give an IDC Prescriptive Teaching Classroom Presentation.

Once you are up to scratch on that then you are ready for the second part of your IDC Staff course. This is the fun part!

PART TWO

The second half of the PADI IDC Staff Course consists of auditing an entire PADI IDC. This is where you get to see an IDC from the IDC Staff's point of view rather than the IDC Candidate's. Remember you will also be evaluating each Candidate Teaching Presentation alongside your Course Director. As a result, at close of play you will be comparing your scores and discussing how you both graded the presentations.

There is an Option B which provides a simulated IDC with simulated presentations for the IDC Staff candidates without auditing an IDC. Obviously this is a shorter option. However your only Evaluation Practice would be of the Teaching Presentations on the IDC DVD. Because of these shortfalls we do NOT recommend this option and have only run it twice in 21 years. The reason for this option was because was because some IDC Staff Candidates could not get the time off work to audit the entire IDC. Therefore if you do take this Option then we very much encourage you to audit a full IDC as soon as possible. This way you can gain the hands on experience before teaching your own Assistant Instructor courses.

REMEMBER: PADI IDC Staff Instructors are qualified to staff IDCs and are invaluable members of any Instructional Team ...

You are now a PADI IDC Staff Instructor – sound good?

Good it should do. You have worked hard to reach the IDC Staff Instructor level!

Now you are ready start staffing IDCs and teach and certify PADI Assistant Instructors independently of a Course Director

We have found that people become PADI IDC Staff Instructors for several main reasons:

  • To increase the number of courses they can teach
  • Become more employable by being able to offer more to the Dive Centre and customers
  • To be able to apply for PADI Master Instructor
  • To become PADI Course Directors

Whatever the reason, PADI IDC Staff is a big stepping stone. You will move into teaching professional level courses and training the future of the Dive Industry.

There are several other courses you should think about now as you prepare yourself for being an active IDC Staff Instructor. Becoming an EFR Instructor Trainer is one step, if you are not already one. This means you can actively help the Course Director on the EFR Instructor portion of an IDC program. And of course you will be also able to certify people wishing to be qualified as EFR Instructors, whether they are divers or not!

PADI Rebreather Instructor is another of the courses you should be looking at taking. Rebreather Diving is becoming more and more mainstream, as Nitrox did in the mid-1990s. Consequently what was once a very elite diving specialty area is now becoming more and more popular and mainstream!
