How can I improve my Buoyancy with a simple course?

So you would like to improve your air consumption and get more dive time. And of course you want to move easier through the water and be like those divers you have seen who seem to glide through the water without the slightest bit of effort. We don't blame you, so did we when we started diving!

Neutral Buoyancy and Hovering motionless

The scuba divers you moving effortlessly and gliding are showing what we call Neutral Buoyancy. This a simple skill, a lot of which you have already learnt on your PADI Open Water Diver course. However there is only so much you can learn in 3 or 4 day. As such, the PADI Buoyancy Course will take your scuba diving skills to the next level.

The first thing we will want to work on, during your PADI Buoyancy Course, is to get you properly weighted. This is probably the number one problem most divers seem to have, especially when diving in new locations or those who only dive a few times a year. However, you will be pleased to know there are no secrets in mastering buoyancy control. It is mostly about practice and having an Instructor explain and show you. So are you wearing the correct amount of weight? As if you have the correct amount of weight in the right place. Then you will only need to occasionally add small amounts of air to your BCD once in a while as you change depths. This in turn means less drag, and more efficient fining. Which results once again in you breathing less air and having more time under the water.

During your PADI Buoyancy Course we will show you many little tricks. In fact, the next step is to fine-tune your breathing so that you naturally make adjustments to your lung volume to change your buoyancy. Once mastered we do this without even thinking about it and that’s when the fun really starts!

Your PADI Buoyancy Course starts with you reading the manual and watching the DVD. Once completed your Indepth PADI Instructor with go through it with you before your scuba dives.

The course has lots of games and exercises:

  • Hovering in different positions, upside down, on your back obstacle courses
  • Weight positioning and distribution and use of weighting guidelines
  • Streamlining and desired body position
  • Visualization techniques prior to dives
  • Buoyancy checks at the surface and underwater

Another thing you will do, which is probably one of the best parts of the dive is the obstacle courses. The is great fun. Your Indepth PADI Instructor will build a variety of underwater obstacle courses for you to swim through. Finally you will get to see how your skills have all come together at the end of the course.

What better thing to do in scuba diving than improving your buoyancy ...

So the PADI Buoyancy Course wasn’t so hard was it?

Buoyancy Control is one of the foundations of Scuba Diving and is an essential part of all the scuba diving you are going to be doing. However there are some courses which do benefit enormously from excellent buoyancy control.

One of the favorite courses to combine with the PADI Peak Performance Buoyancy Specialty Diver Course is the Digital Underwater Photography Specialty Course. As guess what? If you are going to take that perfect photo – yes you go it – you need to be motionless! You can easily make a package of two or more courses. And we can make some of your buoyancy games camera related. For example we can have you hover for one minute with your camera. Say over a sea anemone, while taking macro pics of Nemo your local Phuket clown fish!

Another great way to increase your dive time, apart from mastering the art of buoyancy control is to dive on Enriched Air Nitrox. By decreasing the amount of Nitrogen that is in the air your breathe and increasing the amount of Oxygen in it, which is what Enriched Air Nitrox / EANx actually is, then you absorb less nitrogen for a given depth. As a result you will have more time before your Nitrogen levels reach the same level you would have if you were breathing air.

Even better news is that an Open Water Diver (or even Open Water Course Student,) can take the PADI Nitrox Diver Course.

What could be better than having awesome buoyancy, diving on Enriched Air Nitrox / EANx and taking great photos underwater in the warm waters of Phuket ...
