PADI Underwater Naturalist Course:
And learn more about what you are seeing and interacting with underwater!
You start your Indepth PADI Underwater Naturalist Course by reading through the Underwater Naturalist Specialty Diver manual and watching the DVD. Once done, you then complete the 2 Knowledge Reviews. Your Indepth PADI Underwater Naturalist Instructor will go through the Knowledge Reviews with you before you do the actual Open Water dives. This will probably be done on the boat depending how many PADI Specialty Courses you are taking.
What does the course cover?
During the Underwater Naturalist Course you will see that scuba diving is about what you see beneath the surface. It is not only about admiring the beauty beneath the waves, but also about appreciating how the underwater environment functions. Moreover, the more you understand the aquatic environment you dive in, the more you will be able to enjoy your future scuba dives and what you encounter.
We remember taking our own PADI Underwater Naturalist course when we were student divers very well. And what better place to learn than Phuket! The Phuket local dive sites are great for teaching this course due the amount and diversity of marine life. While you are not as likely to see the "Big Stuff," such as Manta Rays and Whale Sharks here as you would if you were on a Liveaboard Trip to The Similans or Richelieu Rock. However, you can trust us when we say there is more than enough to keep you busy on the Phuket local dive sites. And more than enough variety to keep you excited and busy on your Underwater Naturalist course.
Some of the things you are going to learn more about are:
- The role of aquatic plants, food chains, predator prey and symbiotic relationships. Phuket is great for this.
- Dispel myths and misconceptions about potentially dangerous aquatic life, of which we have a lot.
- Give you greater awareness of aquatic plants and animals that you see and interact with.
- Give you an increased ability to find those critters. Phuket dive sites have loads of critters for you to find.
- The underwater naturalist’s view of organisms and their roles in the environment.
- Responsible interactions with aquatic life, something which every diver should be taught.
- The underwater naturalist’s view of organisms and their roles in the environment.
- A better understanding of how to preserve our diving environment for future generations.
Incidentally most people like to take PADI Specialty Course packages as they tend to be beneficial to each other. This means on a typical Phuket local dive day of 3 dives you can do 1 or 2 dives from different PADI Specialty Diver Courses.
PADI Underwater Naturalist and Project AWARE:
If you’re passionate about scuba diving like we are, then it’s only natural that you are also enthusiastic about conservation. And you will be pleased to know that PADI has a number of AWARE programs and courses. Not surprisingly the focus of these courses is on preserving the underwater environment.
The PADI Underwater Naturalist Specialty Course is also a great way to get started towards becoming an Underwater Conservationist. The knowledge and skills you gain during this course should stay with you for a life time. As a result, your new found knowledge should give you more to enjoy on every dive you make. In addition, hopefully this will also make you a stronger advocate of the wonders of the underwater world.
Time to learn and observe what you are looking at ...
Now you know much more about how the underwater world functions!
The question now is, based on what you learnt on your PADI Underwater Naturalist Course, what can you like to learn about next?
Observing aquatic life underwater takes time and the more time we have underwater the more we are going to see. Therefore, a logical step now is to look at how you can stay underwater longer. One of the easiest ways to do is this is, is to improve your body positioning and wearing the correct amount of weight. Something which divers who make 10-15 dives a year or less can find tricky. Which is not surprising as it does take a dive or two to “get back into Dive Mode.”
However, if you streamline your body positioning underwater, you will find you don’t use as much energy. In turn, this means that you will use less air. And obviously if you are using less air, then you have more time underwater.
Scuba diving on Enriched Air Nitrox / EANx is another simple way extend your dive time. In fact, it can quite dramatically increase your dive time. It sounds complicated but all you are doing is diving on a gas mixture with less Nitrogen and more Oxygen than air. Therefore, because we are breathing in and absorbing more nitrogen than we would if we were diving on air. We can therefore make longer dives at the same depth than if we were diving on air.
Moreover, if you are studying or recognizing fish and coral. Then what better way to capture the image of an awesome encounter or fish or coral you are not sure of or haven’t seen before, than with a digital underwater camera!
Beyond the PADI Underwater Naturalist Course
The PADI Peak Performance Buoyancy, PADI Enriched Air Nitrox and the PADI Digital Underwater Specialty Diver Courses are all excellent ways to continue your scuba diving education. While at the same time improve your scuba diving knowledge and skills in specialty dive areas.
